June 2026: Sarah Berry and Betty Kirk, “Flax Growing and Processing in Chicago”

Guild members Sarah Berry and Betty Kirk shared their and experiences with growing flax for fiber in the Chicago area. Betty grew flax in the late 80s and 90s, and Sarah grew it for the first time in 2025. They discussed growing, processing, spinning, and weaving the fiber as well as touching on the history and growing movement to use more of this incredible fiber. They also brought tools and demonstrated the steps in processing the fiber to make it ready for spinning, and Sarah demonstrated spinning flax for weaving into linen.
